Hanks His next role was as an astronaut and commander Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited him again with Ron Howard. Many critics praised the film and the performance of the entire cast, that included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, and Kathleen Quinlan. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won two. Later in the year, Hanks starred in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated film Toy Story (1995), as the voice of Sheriff Woody. In the same year, he made his directorial debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) which chronicles the decline and rise of a music group from the 1960s. Hanks also played the role as a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine called his performance "charming", and most experts agreed that Hanks acting performance secured him a place in the most popular romantic comedy stars of his time.
